  1. One thing I am very grateful about is that amount of freedom I am given at my job. My supervisor realizes that after working there for three years i have a fairly good idea of what to do. There are some parts of the schedule blocked off where we are doing certain things but i do have say. I find myself very often trying to build rivalries with the kids because when we play more athletic games or team games. They play with more tenacity and are that more willing to put it all on the line to win. This makes my job more enjoyable. I am currently looking to find a murder mystery for the children to do because I think it would be fun. That is the project that I am currently trying to undertake.

  2. Juan Carlos, you are way too competitive with those kids. All the counselors are always trying to give them a hard time. I won’t jump into that because I don’t see myself trying to Win against the kids. I think I see my project more as a challenge for me in the future. I want to go into teaching Art some day and just being able to see what kind of children are out there helps me to see who I am going to work well with and who is going to need more attention not only from me but maybe from people outside that take care of them. The camp hasn’t started the Arts and Craft time but ones it starts I hope to take action and be able to point out what will be done during that time being. Hopefully every camper is engaged in every art project we get done during that day.

  3. Well, the end product of this program is that every kid is supposed to have a finalized kid. Because it's not a large amount of kids I can plan more outside activities like field trips and games to get them more excited about this program. For instance, the day starts with the obligational film lesson plan that we try to make exciting, then we have them try out the plan by themselves, and if there is time I usually try to slip in a fun game. I think because it's like 10 to 13 kids it's easier to deviate from the lesson plan.

  4. At Bell Curves my responsibility this week is developing research on the organizations we are working with this summer. For example, The Boys' Club of New York (BCNY) is an organization geared towards turning young boys into prominent men in modern society. Thoroughly researching BCNY allows Bell Curves an inside glimpse in the personality of the organization. In addition, the research allows a Bell Curves teacher to be assigned with the proper site.
My summer project with Bell Curves is assisting with the planning of their fall fundraiser. When my research assignments are complete, my coordinating for the fundraisers resumes. For the Power Point presentation I will be presenting to all of you, I am keeping track of all my assignments on my flash drive. All that down time I found my self having within the first week is eliminated. Now its work, work, and more work….But it keeps my day interesting.

  5. As i mentioned in the previous blog assignment. My most important project, the reason i was called to intern with The Crotona Park Admistrator's office, is to shot a film showing the changes happening throughout Crotona Park. But i also have to promote events that are happening during the 5 weeks i am interning, as well as, frequently make flyers for these events.

So on a regular day, i would come in, sit down, check the Crotona Park email and reply to anything that has to do with the events. Then while i wait for my boss to arrive, i work on a list of fliers and promotional things that we thought would bring more people to free events.

Then mid-way through the day, we go to Crotona Park, where if the weather is nice, i will walk around and shoot different things around the park.

Then i will come back, we discuss the next few days, in terms of meeting i have to attend with him, and things he would like me to enforce or check-up on that concerns him, such as, a event called NYC WALK.

Then i repeat that each day.

  6. Something happened with my lesson plan yesterday that I think would add to my previous comment. The lesson plan that was put together by my co-workers and I feel through because we had to be reassigned a room with no projection screen. The simple thing we did was to move on to tomorrow's lesson plan then tomorrow we'd do the lesson plan we didn't get to do. Things will come up throughout this internship, but as long as you plan ahead for it things will work out for the best.

  7. Like I said before I write everything down in my work book. That helps me make sure that everything I need to get done gets done. My current project is to make a calendar for the website. Not as easy as it sounds because for the first time I am dealing with HTML and Codex. It is a dificult project because I didn't come up with the layout of the website, so I basically have to start from scratch in my research and refer back to the people that designed the actual site. I make sure to do a little research each day and take notes in my workbook.

  8. I feel like I pretty much answered this in my previous post but I'll be more specific. As soon as I walk in, I work on my individual project. Usually I work on it for about 3 hours and then I go to lunch. The duration of my lunch break depends on how much work I get done. If I have done all or more of the work I set to do before i take my lunch break then I'm out for about an hour. When I come back I continue to work on my individual project and it's usually in the afternoon when I'm given other random tasks. When I'm given a task I do it because they do have short time constraints whereas my project does not have such a time limit. When I'm done with the task I go back to my project. A lot of what I've been doing is my individual project so it hasn't been hard managing my regular job responsibilities with completing my specific project.

  9. I feel when I start working I have to somewhat stay focus because working with kids is not a piece of pie. They can get easily distracted and we have to make sure that they are following directions. In case the situation gets out of hand we have to make sure we speak to the supervisor so he or she can speak to that particular child. Kids will be kids, as mentioned before but there is a limit to their behavior. Depending the environment or place they are in they should learn how to set a good example for the next kid next to them.
Is a tough job to keep kids in check and to make sure they are doing the right thing so they can continue to have the fun they came to have at the camp.

  10. Like I had previously said, at my job I am not given a long term project as it seems the rest of you guys get. This will make it extra difficult for me to create and finish a project that KIPP requires. However, what I am doing to ease this, is write down what I do each day, the different things I learned, and the skills that are needed to create a product and make sure it sells in great numbers in the end.

  11. I've set aside time in my notebook planner and on my Google calendar to work on my specific project each week. Luckily for me, that project, which involves writing a weekly short blurb for the company's online travel website, does not involve more than an hour each week. As for my other assignments, I also usually plan those out in anticipation for the next day, or at the beginning of the day when I come into the office. If I don't finish a project on time, it's usually because my bosses will tell me to put it to the side and start something else. Once that project is done, I can go back to the previous one that I was working on.

  12. I have yet to begin my overall project because I am still juggling school and my internship. Fortunately, this week is my last week of school and I will be able to foucus solely on my internship. The schedule that I plan on doing is to complete my everyday tasks at work and when I go home I will work on my power point.
The first thing I will do is brainstrorm and go to my suervisor and have a discusiion with her about what I will be doing for my project. I will make sure that it is something I am able to do on my own and complete during the time I will be there.
Next, I plan on working on it Monday thru Friday two hours everyday. After my first week of working on the project, I will go to my supervisor and get feedback on things I should work on or change. During the next week, I will take the feedback from my supervisor and add it into my project. I will then take my last few days left of the project and give my final presentation to my supervisor and have her look it over once more. Any changes or advice that she may have, I will fix and revise the project until I am 100 percent sure it is perfect.

  13. One way to ensure that you are staying on time is to create a schedule. You must make sure to stick to the schedule. In my case the schedule was already pre determined. I do however get to decide certain things as long as I stay within these time constrictions. I feel that part of it is also intuitive. For example everyday we go to lunch at 845 am how ever there is not specific time to return from breakfast. I just end it when i feel that all the children are done. Same goes for lunch. Then there are times when i am given an amount of time and I must make the best of it. However it is up to me and the other counselors to decide how we use this time effectively.

  15. 1. Since my job is not too complicated, it is not hard for me to come up with ideas for my logo project. I do not actually do the logo project while I am at work because I may get too caught up in the making of it and forget my duties around the office. However, I do outline and think of quotes while I am not busy. Sometime I am allowed to go on the internet if one of the secretaries goes out for lunch or are not there and I can sit behind their computer and look up other physical therapy logos and advertisement. Honestly I am really excited about this project because it allows me to be creative and show my ideas. But really likethat I will have something to give Forman Physical Therapy when I leave. I think this will be an amazing gift because it will show them how committed and thankful I am for the opportunity.

  16. There are a few things I have to make sure I do in order to make a the curriculum for my program complete. The program is with the parks service of the city and with Columbia University so I have to be sure to including all the input from the contributors. I am currently compiling a kind of pre-curriculum for the first two weeks of the program. I have been taking notes during meetings and throughout the day when my manager or I generate an idea for something we want to do with the students. This way I can be sure to include them in the final product. I have also been keeping a folder of all the work sheet we use and a log of each days activities through reflections and blogs. I have also been working on the project after work because it is a good time to meet with my manager and the other intern involved with the project.

  17. I was assigned to one boss, but I often reported to two or three people at a time. After the first few days on the job, I already became used to it.

As I mentioned in the previous blog for this week, my pencil and pad system aid me in organizing the information and work needed to be done for each employer.

A lot of my time was invested in making sure that my boss' P-Credit course was ready to launch for the 19th of July. This included creating materials, organizing information, and taking control of the money. Still, I worked on two other employer's P-Credit courses, as well as other events throughout the society.

Just remembering to take a break, relax, and look things over was beneficial for me.

Completing my specific job with the rest of my jobs seemed relatively easy. Most of my jobs found a way to relate with one another, and if not, I either had my information written down and/or asked for a little assistance.

  18. It is quite simple to manage between my assignments and project because I work on it when I have some time in between tasks. It also depends on when a certain task is due and if I can finish it in less time than expected then I take that time and work on my project. Also it helps that most of the things that I have been working on are by computer so if need be I can work on my project from anywhere. Another aspect that helps is that some of the tasks are not so time consuming so I get time to work on managing the class schedules, grades and attendance. All in all I have just recently started working on the project and so far I have had enough time to start it. Hopefully the rest of my time working on it can go as smoothly as it is going right now.

  19. Working at the new York historical soceity has made me very happy. For the first time I am dealing with a job that has to do with my major. My job is an non profit organization that carter to the long deeply rooted history of new York. My job. Served as the oldest musem in new York, and a library. I worked in the education department putting together research powerpoints for teachers workshop. It was a little scary because this was the first time I was on my own. I was giving assignment to do and due dates along with them. My assigmemt varies but they all have to do with one thing and that history.

  20. In order to complete my regular job while working on my specific project I had to set aside time to work on it daily. My projects were working on weekly reports for the Branch Chief, and I had to manage my time so that I could complete that while shadowing different Probation officers and doing my job there. It was hard at first because on reporting days a lot of probationers come in and you have to ask them different questions, place it into the system, do random drug testing and handle paper work. This sometimes left me pressed for time but I realized if I worked on them early enough I had enough time to do my duties with the probation officers.

  21. My main project so far is working with a professional pianist, and I have been working on setting up a better image for him to get him more serious work and gigs. Since he is fairly young it is important not for him to have the appearance of a young musician but of a young PROFESSIONAL musician. So I have taken the time out to actually get to know this individual and jotted down all of his experiences, performances, his history ect. until I could fully write a great bio on him. After getting to know him I began to search for any info people may of written on him from the internet to source some information. Finally I am putting together a professional bio with images and video clips of him to have on myspace and on facebook.

  22. I work independently and when I get an assignment I first prioritize it from high to low. I consider whether the assignmennt will be time consuming, thought provoking,or short and sweet. After I priortitze the assignment I work on the one that is the most pressing, or one that I think will take some revisions. Most of the time I like to hand my assignments in early so I can receive feedback and hand in a better finished product.

  23. Working with kids at camp has one specific duty, ensuring there safety and getting them involved in activities. That is my main job responsibility. On another note, making friends with the kids has the benefit in earning their trust. This is an important procedure which will only work for the councilors. Knowing the right things to say or do to get a specific behavior out of the child effectively.

Time management as a camp councilor depends on how fast the kids react to a given command. Sometimes it can be a tedious task because kids of the age twelve and above like to do things on their own time. This in turn, effects the entire group and slows down the pace. Disciplining the kids to react to commands will shift the tide and everything else will fall into place

  24. Unfortunately, I haven’t started my individual project yet. I’ve been training for the last two weeks on how to teach and chart information on a student. However I plan on teaching a group lesson before I leave my internship. Since they are mentally challenged, this lesson will be a simple one (manners, colors, simple math problems, sharing, etc.). If I were to start this now though, I would keep teaching during the day, then planning my lessons when I go home. When I get to work early I would then review the lesson with the teacher to see if it is worthy to be taught. The teacher could also improve on my lesson because she is the professional. I should be starting a rough draft this week.

  25. At a camp as big as the camp im working at the number one priority is to keep the children safe. If anything happens to the kids we are obviously going to receive the backlash. Other responsibilities I do on a regular basis is help kids cross the street, taking kids to the bathroom and carrying equipment. Making sure the area the kids are playing in is secure and safe is another thing that we do. Making friends with the kids is another responsibility of mine. As i said in previous post befriending the kids makes live a lot easier. If you dont have a connection with a kid they are more likely to give you attitude when you politely ask to do something.

Time Management is complicated. With our kids they know the right thing to do but constantly put us behind schedule because they do not follow simple instructions. It takes away from their gym time and other activities. When they do not follow directions they get punished and it prevents them from fully following the schedule. Disciplining the kids however is an effective strategy as they get tired of getting punished. Its an unfortunate situation for the kids who behave.

  26. Since my main assignments are usually either filing, or creating spread sheets & other organizing type stuff...I haven't found a niche yet for a final project. Seeing as this job placement was last minute I didn't think of anything worth while or even remotely close to a project that KIPP wants. For my former placement I was thinking about shooting an documentary/interview about a up and coming band from Queens. I had actually already set up contacts and such. Unfortunately my current position isn't a film/journalism heavy place. I work at a school but with the site supervisor, the assistant principal. However because he knows my love for film he allowed me to shadow the film studies class for the summer school kids.

I'm hoping with this side project I can intermingle it with my project for the summer internship. Maybe make a lesson plan and use some of my videos as examples? Or still use the band idea and incoporate it to a lesson plan?
That way I can still do my work, but enjoy it as well.

  27. I don't have a problem with the working being given to me because I have failed to be challenged. I'm in human resources at a hospital doing clerical work when I would rather be working with the patients or helping out the staff with hospital related issues. The jobs are fairly basic and slightly more tedious than rather than complex.

  28. Like I mentioned before, handling all the Warner YouTube accounts is our priority now. Aside from that I'm given work from over people in the department that can be done in a day or less like programing for Verizon Wireless or Myxer.com. I think it's important to always ask your supervisor or the person you're doing an assignment for when do they need it done by. it's important to communicate and know, what might be a priority to them, but you think it's not.

  31. I am interning as a Sports Agent. My projects will be to go out onto the field and find talent. In specific, I am working in the baseball department. My boss told me prior that he would send me out to baseball parks to find new and upcoming baseball stars. I don't know the specifity of my assignments, but I know that I will be busy and working hard.

  32. By reading my fellow KIPP lads' comments, I will take notes on how they handle their projects and availability. I notice some students have more time while others are steady busy. Know that I will pay attention to my fellow lads and take their advice.

  33. In my internship Im working with High School students at Fordham university in a college preporatory program. At first I was observing the teaching styles of Mr Weeks(SAT teacher) and Ms. Morales(Writing teacher) Later on as I got intergrated I was given some lessons and quizzes to administer. There wasnt alot of assignments that I had to do at home nor was I given a specific project to do. Many of the task I did was grading papers, monitoring studens, and talking about my college experiences to the rising seniors.

  34. My day-to-day usually depends on what projects the attorneys have for me. Usually I check in with one or two associates who usually give me work. I am also helping out one of my co-worker who is backed up with lots of file work. AS a way to help him and ensure good time-management we are splitting the work and while I type files and organize them he is putting them into folders and we have done a pretty good job. Our office is almost cleared up!

How are you managing your regular job responsibilities with completing your specific project? Please give specific time management strategies.
