Professional development is necessary as you build your network and develop new ideas to attain your career goals. Share how valuable the professional development day was for you.
I thought the professional development day was very useful to me. Even though what i want to pursue was not part of the day i still found that all of the ones that were offered some how all tie back together to mine some how. A lot of the professional skills that each presenter portrayed to us is useful in every know profession today. What I found most useful was the resume building and interview taking skills. As my resume continues to build its helpful to know what employers really notice and consider. I also enjoyed the strong presence that our presenter had. She served to be a great role model for us. When i grow up i want to be just like her!!!
Professional development day was way better than the other ones KIPP usually hosts. For one, I managed to get a meeting with Kristen, from PR/Marketing, which couldn't have come at a better time for me. Secondly, I think they just had better people that can do something for us. I mean it's nice to hear people talking about what they can do, but it's like what can you do for me as well. I don't mean to put it as bluntly, but a lot of us are in college and need internships and jobs. It's more important to have people who can provide that then to just hear a life story from someone. Especially if you already know your career choice then it's kind of a bore to sit there. I didn't like that America's Top Editor though. As a writer, I expected to hear a bit more detail about her job, but she couldn't provide that so I definitely didn't like it. I think KIPP should focus on getting people who can really explain their job in a detailed manner. Luckily, I'm familiar with her field, but it's not very motivating to have a boring speaker who can't really talk about her job. Career Plunge was good as well. All in all I liked it. It wasn't a waste of time and I learned a lot.
I enjoyed the professional development workshops I participated in. The classes where informative, with a lot of info that I never heard. I found the speakers of the workshops I attended to be interesting and thoughtful. I visited the career plunge workshop, which I enjoyed because it helped me answer questions about where I want tot go with my career after college and how to structure my experience to reach my goals. She what employers due when they look at w resume and how to conduct yourself during an interview, how to answer the most important questions. The other two that I went to about journalism and finance where also good. The first about the media was interesting to me because I had the chance to see a perspective of the media from someone within the media. She had so criticisms but claimed that we have the responsibility get informed if the media doesn't always offer the best info. She also talked about us not letting our choices for majors dictate our career paths. I think its interesting that both of the speakers mention that we should be exploring what we do (work wise) for a while before we know for sure. I also found the finance workshop helpful. I am not the best with money and it was interesting to hear psychological and cultural explanations for my behavior with money. I plan to use of the tips she discussed.
I really liked the professional development day. In the past I could not say the same however, I felt that this time the professional development day was very useful for me. I am not sure if this is because I am older and now all of the connections are beginning to come in handy, or if this one was just better than the ones in the past. I loved the session about the NFL, mostly because the speakers were Black women. I felt more of a connection knowing that the NFL is open to all type of people, not just men and fans. I will really like to work for the NFL as an athletic trainer and I think this session made my goals seem a little closer and real. I got the contacts of the two ladies and they gave me some websites to look in about where to intern. I felt personally that I received a lot more from this professional development day than ever before.
Although I didn't really get to hear from speakers that pertained to my field of interest I got alot of useful information. One of the speakers gave us actual numbers of how a black man making 100,000 a year with good credit could still pay higher interest rates than a white man making 30,000 a year with bad credit due to the preconceived notion that black people are irresponsible with money. This just shows me the importance of doing your homework before getting yourself into anything. It's your responsibility to walk in a place with some time of prior knowledge to protect yourself
The professional development day proved to be useful in different areas of my life. With the lessons that I learned from the Journalism and money workshop I believe that I am a better person and now a more aware buyer. Being a science major who takes a lot of humanities classes especially in Africana Studies learning more about modern day "Black Taxes" and being stronger and determined in everything that I do will help with my profession.
I knew that most careers are about the politics of the business you are in, but I think that it is important for young adults who are minorities to understand that people are still ignorant and prejudice. It is important for us to know that other people are experiencing this and there are calm, productive ways to deal with the situation. These productive ways can also help us move on so that our dreams are not halted because of another's foolishness.
Professional Development day was amazing thank you so much and thanks to all stars helping kids organization for setting up the day. Although this was the second time the KTC Internship program has partnered with all stars to create the career incubator, this was my first time participating in it. I was not expecting to walk out of the professional development day feeling as informed as I did. All of the presenters were great and well-spoken about their careers. I enjoyed both "The Career Plunge" and "Learning to Market the World" sessions and I thought both of these sessions were the most relevant and helpful to me. I think I might look into and possibly sign up for the program "Inroads" and I also will look into the Public Relations industry. I came out of St. John's University that day truly inspired and motivated. Thanks again!
Professional Development Day was very helpful and occured at a perfect timing, since I am going to my sophomore year of college. Hearing the advice and experiences of the people who were hosting sessions, motivated me to take upon more experiences and internships that will prepare me for my career. I also greatly appreciated the workshops that dealt with marketing and advertising since it deals more with the career that I wish to follow. Hearing the advice from the lady who writes for a fashion magazine and who works in other areas in fashion was also really useful and valuable for me. If I could offer any advice it would be to provide a various range of careers such as law, fashion, business entrepeneurs, people who work with broadcasting, athletes, etc. Overall, it was a great event!
At this point in my life, I have no clue yet as to what career path I want to choose for my future. I know that this isn't a huge problem, but I do need to figure this out sooner than later. At the Professional Development day, I leanred a bunch of new things. The most valuable thing I leanred was that I don't need to figure it out now, but I do need to intern to help me along the way. Interning is as important as going to school, one of the speakers said. I realized that this can be true because as you intern it is a glance at the career you might want to take on in the future. Over all I found the Professional Development day to be effective. I learned about way more careers that I have never took intrest into and am now thinking about as future career possiblities, it put me at ease knowing that at this point in my life it is okay if I dont know what I want to be doing yet, and it open up a lot more opportunities, like networking.
The professional development day was a success. I enjoyed being engrossed with people from their different, yet respected fields. It was nice to gain an insider into the lives of a few individuals who have jobs that I personally have not come across.
Some of the information given to us that day are things that I will definitely try to utilize throughout my job searching/obtaining. In talking about acquired skills, there is one class in particular that I felt was helpful. During the Career Plunge, Jacquillia Trigg, gave a nice direct approach in introducing and selling yourself to a business and/or boss. What I found particularly helpful, was the Interview prep kit. Having her reenact the sample questions (which provided a poll of particular stressors, I found useful. The whole kit in general is a great summary in how to prepare and become familiar with different interview tactics. I know that I will be looking through this kit in the near future.
Part Two: The professional development day allowed me to practice on my networking skills. I was happy that by the end of the day I received a few contacts and learned about different internship opportunities. As well as learned a few things that I could work on which would help me become a better candidate in applying for a position.
My favorite sessions within the professional development day are between the America’s Next Top Editor and the Emerging Career Fields Panel.
The America’s Next Top Editor class took me by surprise. I never knew how much I could have taken pleasure in the publishing world. Though I was not used to the tactics of how she taught her session, I thought that Mela Ottaiano’s did a great job in introducing me into her world. I have found a new appreciation due to the mock exercises and am thankful that this situation arise in which I was able to take part in this session.
I wanted to have a whole comment dedicated to the Emerging Career Fields Panel.
I found this panel to be particularly interesting because it was such a diverse group of characters. From the RN, the District Sales Manager of HP, and the FBI Special Agent, it was nice to gain a wide perspective on the different fields and the life experiences that led to their varied careers.
Out of the seven panelists, there were a few in which I felt like I had certain things in common with. I thought it was great that by the end of the presentation I was able to walk up to some of them and ask specific questions that were on my mind.
Due to the presenters, there are a few more things that I added to my list to accomplish within college, as well as some ideas that I have to think about.
All in all, I found that the day served its purpose in opening me up to new ideas, more aspirations, and of course, more questions.
The professional development day for me was a mixture of helpful and mundane. Compare to the ones in past years I feel like I got the most out of this day, more than before. At the same thing, because I've been doing this for awhile, many things seemed a bit repeative. I feel like that maybe the high school students and the college students should be in different classes I guess, seeing as we are in two different places in our lives right now.
However there was many great things about this development session for me. Being a journalism student, I was allowed to meet two amazing women in the field of work I'm interesting in. This was amazing opportunity for me to network and for me to put myself out there. One of the women, had such an inspiring story, I saw myself in her. So instead of just listening to her story, I made sure she knew who I was and what I had to say. And I think she ended up liking me because she gave me her card.
Honestly, the Professional Development was a big review already. I already knew half of the things going on during the sessions (Resume, Interviewing skills etc.). Most of the sessions did not have pertain to my major (Childhood Education/ Special Education). I think that the KIPP sessions should be separated between high school students and college students because most of us know the stuff already. It would have been nice to have some sessions that had to deal with education. I felt sort of left out in that aspect. However, the sessions dealing with finance were very informative. There were so many things that I didn’t know. Now I’m trying to learn these things for the future. Plus it was pretty cool to win a computer!
The professional career day was very good for me. All though majority of the people there were not related to the field I intend to go into. However, I feel like certain work ethics could be used going into the working world period. Also, one lady spoke about resumes. It opened my eyes a little she stated that a person only looks over a resume for twenty seconds. Not that it’s an excuse to just put whatever on a resume. However, it shows you that ones needs to be able to sale themselves in a short summary. One should not have a resume of two pages. Also, I had doubts about going to school for nursing so I’m a step down majoring in medical administration, but as soon as I get my associates I will go back to school for nursing so that I do not over whelm myself. The career day just gave me something to think about.
I was sure what to expect walking in there. I honestly thought to myself "Here we go ANOTHER professional development day". As the day progressed I definitely took it seriously especially as a college senior going into the work force soon. All the speakers had good advice. I've been questioning if I had mad the right decision by majoring in something so specific as music management. What if I wanted to do something that had nothing to do with the music industry after I graduated? After speaking to some of the people there I felt a little better about not being stuck in one field of work for the rest of my life.
even though i wasnt there i was sure that i knew what would be talk about there. I've been questioning if I had done all the step that needed to be made when trying to network with other well. it importqant now a days to have sometype of networking skill because now it not what you know but who you know.
The professional development day was a success. I enjoyed it. I am glad that a lot of my suggestions from previous years professional development were included. I asked for more of the arts to be represented and one of the speakers was a graphic designer with her own design firm. It was refreshing to see some of these professions from a first person perspective. I found marketing very interesting as well because a lot of what they said pertained to my major. Its a relief to hear that these people had succeeded in their life goal and were putting their educations into a job they enjoyed or at least worked towards. I have been hearing a lot of stories lately that young adults are graduating from college just to end up working in a restaurant for a part of their life, which kind of had me worried but these workshops were definitely a form of inspiration and motivation.
Participating in a numerous amount of KIPP to College activities, I would have to say this Professional Development day had to be the most enjoyable. I’m not quiet sure if it's because the overall program was more pleasant or if I took advantage of the day. Honestly I think it's a little bit of both. For the last 4 summers I "knew" I wanted to be in the education field. Once going to college and being a History major, my career path took a drastic shift. I feel like my gift of service could be used in the event coordinating field. Although I figured this much out, I didn’t know where to start. The Professional development day gave me direction. It was a stepping stone to my new career path. Now I know it might be best to change my major to public relations. Something I would of never known. Also, the professional development day was a perfect place to work on networking skills. If any intern didn’t take away something constructive from that day they must have been on Mars. This Blog has been an opportunity to honestly but appropriately share our internship experiences. I just want to say I look forward to blogging on the internship site every week. Thank you Mr. Glaspie !!
I enjoyed the professional development day. I liked that there were a variety of career professionals that were avaliable to speak with us. Out of all the sessions I attended the Emerging Career Field Panel was my favorite. However, we only had a few minutes to actually talk to them and ask them questions when we broke off to speaking to the individuals with the careers that we found interesting. I agree with Miles, the sessions should have been separated between high school and college students. I felt kind of bored having to hear about how to interview and what to put on your resume. Overall, i feel that the group that will really take away the most from this professional development day are the high school students.
I didnt see anything in my particular field. With that being said it did give me an in depth look of some of the things my classmates are going in to. I am a political Science major and all though there was not anyt in particular i did see things that could some how correlate down the line. An example was the public relations. All though Im not running for politics PR is very important in my field. Perception is every thing. It is very important to learn how to do that effectively. Another very important workshop I got the oppertunity to sit in on was the marketing workshop. The guy seemed very interested in his job. He was able to share with us how marketing work. Which is also very important as a person knowing how to market yourself.
I learned a great deal from the professional development. I learned that in the NFL that making decision that may appear simple such as updated the NFL logo took them over 8 months to accomplish. Team work which we have learned our middle school days at KIPP is a big factor when it comes to projects and tasks being completed in a work environment.
I learned the importance of saving and investing your money. Some people work and work and get paid and never really break down their finances and understand wear their money is going and where it should be going.
Overall I feel professional development is totally necessary for everyone. It betters us as people and as professionals where ever we may end up. The more we know the better we can become and the more likely we will be hired for a job and not only that but capable of sustaining a position in the is fast pace, unstable economy we are in.
First and foremost, i would like to apologize for my late reply.
Networking, a word that has been instilled into everyone of us since we cross the graduation stage entering into high school. It is a form of communication which can help you move forward in this world and into your dreams. Gathering emails, business cards and/or a simple a "Hello, My Name Is..." can leave an impression onto a future benefactor.
In doing these KIPP internships for about 5 years now, every year I seem to learn and grasp a little more into the importance of NETWORKING.
This year, I learned from one of our honored guest how to uphold a connection you have already made. I have found that the hardest thing to do with a new connection is upholding that connection. The beginning stages are so simple, "Hello, can I get your email" after simply describing your likes, dislikes and ambitions. But after the meeting what can you do to keep that connection formal and not annoying or intrusive.
I gathered from our speaker that the best thing to do is a few days after meeting Person A, send them an email saying how much you appreciated speaking with them, how they may have inspired you and if they are free anytime to speak further over a cup of Starbucks coffee.
From there, take the ride in which the current will send you.
I agree with Karen. Learning from many professionals, even those who are not particularly in the field I want to explore was very useful. Again these professionals depicted their worlds to us and gave us incite into their likes, dislikes and how they deal with unwanted halts on their dreams and careers. Their anecdotes reinforced my knowledge about how tough life is, but also reinforced my want and desire to go after what I want, and persevere because it is my dream.
I also agree with Karen in that we should continue to explore many different aspects of the work force. It is an important factor, and I realize this now, although I was not sure about the topic choices before, in the success of the students and of the program. Many students are not aware of what they want to do, and for those who are aware, networking is still a great achievement; one never knows when they will need someone in another area.
Although it is important to know different professions, I think that it is also important to split up the groups of students into college and high school. I think that this will benefit both groups because college students have different needs and questions after going through some realizations in college. I think that this will also benefit the students because the college students have an idea of what they want to do and they are able to curb the professional development to their needs. As a rising junior, I think it is important for me to find out as much as I can about one of the hardest grad school professions, medical school.
I also think that splitting up the two groups helps the college students not get bored with the development days. Since out 7th grade year most of the KIPP Academy students learned how to write resumes. Last year I think the resume session was very useful because it was different, there were new examples and being in college we learned what was more of a professional resume outline.
Overall it was a useful event that I would like to attend again in the future.
I feel that some times as a person it is diffcult to take that initial step needed for networking . Toro suggested that we ask them out to a cuo of coffee. That seems likea great idea but when having this coffee what should be said? What should be discussed? I feel that the point of networking basically comes down to the age old question what can you do for me ? But i dont know how to get to this question what steps need to be taken first. The honest truth is offcourse that if you bluntly ask some one for something with out first having a foundation or a sort of trust. I feel that the immediate reaction with out this is to say no. That is why I feel that it is so difficult. I remember one of the speakers suggested that we should tell people what we want and what our ambitions are. But who should we tell? Who should we be open to?
I agree with completly with Cordelia , I feel that the groups should be split up. I feel that as we were watching the presentations that they were nto specific enough. I feel that when we did the career plunge alot of the topics were tailored towards the younger kids. I had heard most of the material prior and as a result it was alot more difficult to pay attention. But other than that I feel that the day was helpful. It was also a great oppertunity to see many of my middle school classmates who I had not seen in a very long time.
I did not make the professional day but i am sure it was a wonderful blast. i know i could have learned alot from many different people. also could of learned stuff to make me organized and responsible which is much needed with me obviously. but i apologize for missing this hard put together event will sure try to be at the next one.
Professional Development was very helpful. Each year is something different with new people and their experience of how they got to where they are at now. It inspires me a lot the things they had to say. Many of the workshops were pretty helpful to me. Learning to Market the World or the America’s Next Top Editor. The Enthusiasm the presenters had while presenting made me want to know more and more about their career’s in general. When they went from studying law to becoming a teacher or just doing something completely different that they had no idea they would be doing in the long run. A few of the workshops helped me to see what type of different jobs there are out there. There isn't one similar to the next but everyone can be connected in their own way.
the professional development day was very helpful. every year i learn somthing different. this day explains to me the ins and outs of what is going on in this world
Professional development is necessary for growth. We may have acquired some knowlegde about professionalism but there is always room for growth. One can never be considered too professional. The professional development day at St. John's University was by far the best one I've attended. All the sessions were helpful because these profesionals were giving us their stories. They were living proof that if we kept doing what we were supposed to be doing then we could end up just as successful. I enjoyed my last session the most because it had the panel with people in Law enforcement, video game industry, a nurse and fashion editor. This panel allowed us to ask questions and to meet them personally. I was able to meet a special agent for the FBI, I was able to learn about his journey as an agent and get his contact information. It was an inspirational day for me. As I enter my senior year I still have no idea as to what I want to do but they made me feel like its okay and everything will fall into place. I will now make a plan but also keep in mind my likes and dislikes and create a path towards my career. Professional development day went really well. I got some new people in my list of contacts that I can reach out to for insight and guidance.
This Professional Development Day was really beneficial for me because it helped me brainstorm ideas of other things that I could do in Media/ Publishing world. Up until this past year, I was dead set on working in Magazine Publishing on the editorial side. Then I lost interest, and I've felt a bit lost ever since. The presentation that resonated with me the most in terms of giving me new inspiration was with Kristen Wise, the PR/ Marketing Director. I want to learn more about what she does and how she does it, and I want to see if I might be able to pursue that. Even if this idea doesn't last forever, at least I'll have some more focus on something rather than being lost and confused about everything.
well the session i stayed in was pretty helpful because i got to hear from a person that seemed to be in the same situation as us growing up. she had a very good understanding of what we have to do and what she emphasized was its who you know.
Professional development actually helped me a lot especially the career plunge session. The presenter gave great advice for interviews and resumes. She also gave us incite on what a potential boss is looking for. another extremely useful thing she did was give us examples of what kinds of things you could do to make yourself stand out more from a huge pile of papers and people. The emerging career panel was also a great way to see what other career options there if anyone is uncertain about what career path to take. They did a very good job in explaining what the steps to getting a good position in the career field they work in are. They also were great people to meet if any of the presenters were in the field you want to join. They were a great inspiration and showed that no matter what gets in your way, it is possible to make the future you want a reality.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend. Once again, I have been stuck in jury duty, but I wish I was able to attend the professional development day. I say that because it would of helped me to my advantage. For one, I would of had the chance to meet my fellow KIPP lads and discuss each and every one of their internships. We all could swapped information and even resumes. Also, I could of met some of the professionals. This would of helped greatly as the professionals would of dropped knowledge on me about work and life. I love networking and this professional development day would of helped my internship and career.
I am glad that all of you KIPP lads enjoyed the professional development day. I like the fact that some of you gave some tips and pointers to ensure that the next professional development event will be more successful.
Professional Development day was the best one I have been to so far. We learned about different fields and what they entail. For people trying to decide what they want to do in life, it is very informative. The panel was particularly helpful. KIPP did a wonderful job picking a variety of fields that people are considering with their career choices. Everyone had a different story of how they got to the top and it was intriguing to hear how they got there. A woman who worked for Adidas got in the business by simply passing business card and running into someone who worked for a sports magazine. Another interesting story was the NFL and the Super Bowl logo. One woman got into the business the normal way. However, the other lady was a professional dancer and got in to the NFL business that way. The ladies, also showed us the new logo for the next Super Bowl, it was elegant. If there was one thing I learned from professional development day it was to build your connects.

ReplyDeleteSome of the information given to us that day are things that I will definitely try to utilize throughout my job searching/obtaining.

ReplyDeletePart Two:
ReplyDeleteThe professional development day allowed me to practice on my networking skills.
Part Three:
ReplyDeleteI wanted to have a whole comment dedicated to the Emerging Career Fields Panel.
ReplyDeleteHowever there was many great things about this development session for me.
ReplyDeleteThe professional career day was very good for me.
ReplyDeleteI was sure what to expect walking in there.
ReplyDeleteeven though i wasnt there i was sure that i knew what would be talk about there. I've been questioning if I had done all the step that needed to be made when trying to network with other well. it importqant now a days to have sometype of networking skill because now it not what you know but who you know.
ReplyDeleteThe professional development day was a success.
ReplyDeleteParticipating in a numerous amount of KIPP to College activities, I would have to say this Professional Development day had to be the most enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteThis Blog has been an opportunity to honestly but appropriately share our internship experiences.
ReplyDeleteI didnt see anything in my particular field.
ReplyDeleteI learned a great deal from the professional development. I learned that in the NFL that making decision that may appear simple such as updated the NFL logo took them over 8 months to accomplish. Team work which we have learned our middle school days at KIPP is a big factor when it comes to projects and tasks being completed in a work environment.
ReplyDeleteI learned the importance of saving and investing your money.
ReplyDeleteNetworking, a word that has been instilled into everyone of us since we cross the graduation stage entering into high school.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Karen in that we should continue to explore many different aspects of the work force.
ReplyDeleteI also think that splitting up the two groups helps the college students not get bored with the development days.
ReplyDeleteI agree with completly with Cordelia , I feel that the groups should be split up.
ReplyDeleteI did not make the professional day but i am sure it was a wonderful blast. i know i could have learned alot from many different people. also could of learned stuff to make me organized and responsible which is much needed with me obviously. but i apologize for missing this hard put together event will sure try to be at the next one.
ReplyDeleteProfessional Development was very helpful.
ReplyDeleteA few of the workshops helped me to see what type of different jobs there are out there. There isn't one similar to the next but everyone can be connected in their own way.
the professional development day was very helpful. every year i learn somthing different. this day explains to me the ins and outs of what is going on in this world
ReplyDeleteProfessional development is necessary for growth.
ReplyDeleteThis Professional Development Day was really beneficial for me because it helped me brainstorm ideas of other things that I could do in Media/ Publishing world.
ReplyDeletewell the session i stayed in was pretty helpful because i got to hear from a person that seemed to be in the same situation as us growing up. she had a very good understanding of what we have to do and what she emphasized was its who you know.
ReplyDeleteProfessional development actually helped me a lot especially the career plunge session.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I wasn't able to attend.
ReplyDeleteI love networking and this professional development day would of helped my internship and career.
I am glad that all of you KIPP lads enjoyed the professional development day. I like the fact that some of you gave some tips and pointers to ensure that the next professional development event will be more successful.
ReplyDeleteProfessional Development day was the best one I have been to so far.
