Check in Assignment week 2

It is important to set goals and develop strategies for achieving them. How are you prioritizing your work load in order to meet deadlines and to take control of those things that would derail workplace productivity?

  1. when i get to work and get my assignments for the kids i realize that we have to get the work done but we have to have fun at the same time to keep them focused and motivated to keep working.that is why reinforcers are so important. so for everything to run smoothly i have to know what all the kids like and if they cant speak i have to try and think with them so i could get it to them.once i got to know each of the kids the reinforcers is what motivates them to keep working.the goal is to have the kids learn but also stay focused and enjoy it learning

  2. I actually have really bad memory when it comes to deadlines and things like that so I plug in the date or the assignment in my Blackberry so I can remember to complete it. I've found this action to be very helpful because it reminds me hours before it's due and it never fails. So far I've been doing good with keeping up with my work load and assignments so I'm proud of myself for that. The kids often derail workplace productivity when they show up late or forget lessons. I always prepare ahead of time for these roadblocks because I know how I was at 13, 14. It helps to know how to act when you were that kid who was always late. I simply give the kids 5 to 10 minutes before I begin the lesson plan for the late people. This little time gives me a chance to recap with the kids who are early. I set goals everyday to make sure that I'm on track because at the end of this program I have to make sure that every kid has a final film. Because I know how the program is supposed to pan out it's easier to make goals. Everything is on track right now because my co-workers have set their goals similar to mine and we are all in constant communication.

  3. At first i will sit down with my boss and ask him "What need to be done this week?" As he tells me a list of things that has to be done by Friday i write them down. After doing a list of projects i have to do, we continue to talk about what needs to be done on each day. So for example, "Preparing for Thursday's night Opera event, by promoting, and making flyers." Alongside other projects he ask of me.

When we are done meeting, i will work down the list at the most important to things that do noot need to much focus on that particular day. Then after finishing one project, i will return to my boss, and we will go over the project make changes, edit it, then move on to the next project.

On top of the mini things that i have to do around the office, i also have to prepare everyday to shot a film, for Crotona Park. So each day, for about an hr or two i will take a walk around Crotona, and gather footage. Then coming back to finish the give assignments.

So far in my first week and a half here, this seemed to work with no frustrations.

  5. I am at a desk alot of the time when at work, and when I receive a deadline I do three things: (1) I write down in my notebook the assignments I have to do. (my notebook has been serving as a planner for this summer.) (2) I use post-its and to write down the pressing items that need to be done, and at the bottom I list assginments that I know the dealine is coming up. (3) I put assignments and dealines on my calendar marked with a time, so that way if I am working on something, the computer sends me a notification about my dealine coming up. These three things, help me organize and not have my brain cluttered with all my assignments.

  6. This summer i have a heavy work load and a demanding schedule. However, I am the type of person who does forget plenty of things as well as loses many things. This summer I've decided to take a different approach to things and hopefully these habits will follow me throughout my next two years of high school.

At this point i own a blackberry. Blackberry's have a variety of tools. One of the tools in which a blackberry has is a calendar. This calendar as well as a calendar on igoogle.com is my life. I write down everything that needs to be done and when i have to do it. This has helped me maintain everything as well as meet every deadline. For anyone who has the same issues a calendar on your phone is the best way to go because it reminds you about things its not like any other calendar in which you have to remember to look at it. If you are a person who forgets things whose to say you wont forget to look at the calendar. Which in turn makes a calendar that is not electronic useless and a waste of paper.

  7. I set up a sort of design plan with what my boss has asked me to do. She has given me a list of responsibilities for the whole summer and I sorted out what needed to be done daily and what are some of the big projects I am working towards. For example one of my daily tasks is mainting the website and keeping the blog updated, that always must get done. My accumulating tasks are things such as archiving, brochure design and surrounding area research.

There are four interns working for the dwyer and we each get different tasks, that may sometimes overlap. That helps us with teamwork and helps us to each be responsible for carrying our own balanced amount of workload. It definitely helps that there are four of us. What I do to ensure that these tasks I prioritize get done is that I write them dowm, on a calender or in my work notebook, and I am constantly refering back to it.

  8. In order to make things run easier for me I usually start with the easiest tasks and work my way to the harder ones. If the easiest ones can be done quickly and efficiently then that gives me more than enough time to work on the harder tasks. For example they gave me a whole stack of tests and they wanted me to put them in the computer system and then email them to the teachers that needed them by the end of the day and they also needed me to do a couple of other tasks. I made sure to do the other tasks as soon as possible so that I could have all day to work on the tests and emailing to make the deadline. It also helps me to have a planner to keep dates in order for dates and times they want the tasks done by.

  9. I truly do not have much to say on this topic. When i go to work there is not much to do. All i truly do is make copies. For one day this week they did place me at another site where the lady I worked with was very hands on with me. She actually Exlained to me what it is that is being done. The people that come into the office are coming for xr of certain body parts that they are having issues with. So bacially one has to register them and make sure that all the paper work for the the doctor they are going to see has been filled out. That is also were the copies of one Id and Insurance card comes into play which is what I always did at the other office , btu was not explained to as to why. That was more of a learning experince for me.

  11. Setting deadlines for myself is what's keeping me on track and productive. I don't have set time deadlines given to me by my supervisors so it's really all up to me to make sure I get done what needs to get done. Often times I set a time limit of a couple hours to get x amount of work done and if I finish on time I "reward" myself by taking an entire hour lunch break or a 10 minute break or going to the kitchen for a few minutes and having a drink of water. It's working so far and I'm really proud of myself. And if I don't get my work done on time then I take a shorter lunch break and don't take breaks in between my work. Ultimately breaks have become a sense of reward for me in order to achieve my set goals. I pretty much spend all day working on my project but I do get a couple other tasks to do that don't have anything to do with my project. So when that happens I work quickly and efficiently, and apply my "break is a privilege" technique and get it done. I'm glad I'm as disciplined as I am because so far so good. =)

And I make a list of what I have to get done because I love checking things off! It helps keep me motivated and efficient.

  12. I dont have a heavy work load. There's a calender on the wall that have me very organized. I'm always lookoing at it so I know that im doing the right thing at the right time. this is how i make sure i dont miss my deadline and it letme tak control of what i have to do.

  13. Prioritizing is the most important step when trying to meet a deadline. With the work load that I recieve at my internship, I am given a deadline everyday. The way I prioritize this work load is to always get to work as soon as I am given my task. This helps a lot because where I work anything can happen at any moment where I will either be out for the rest of the day or told to hold out on the first task and begin a new one.

I always go for help if there is any struggle in meeting the deadline. My supervisor will tell me to disregard the least important task and continue with the others. Just SIMPLIFYING my workload from least important to most important helps to put my priorities on track.

To be honest I do get distracted very easily and I often do need to be rejuvinated in order to maintain focus. What helps me is listening to music so that I can block out other people around me stay in my own little place. I also take a break from what I am doing and enter a new location that is a lot different from where I do my work... like a change in scenary. These two small tricks help me to make reach my deadline every week

  14. I am not given long term projects in my job therefore, there is not much planning that I have to do. I am given small projects throughout the day. These projects will range from 30 minutes to two hours in timie consuming. What I do to help me finish these tasks is set a timing that I would like to complete the small project and always try to learn at least one new thing by the end of the task. For example learning how to read the style number, why I have to cut a fabric a certain way, or the names of the different fabrics.

  15. I feel that to meet my goals and deadlines i must rely heavily on my co workers. The end goal for me is for children to enjoy their summers and I must do whatever it takes for them to enjoy it. So I sometimes work together with my coworkers and we sit there and will try to decide what is the most effective way to create a game which the kids will enjoy. The last thing I want is for them to be bored at any point in time I remember last week we wanted to create some sort of obstacle course that had not been done before. A few of my co workers and I got together to see what resources we had available to us and using these we made decisions.

  16. Like Melissa and Toro, I either inserted reminders into my telephone or wrote them down.

At my internship, I was always known as the person with the pencil and pad. Throughout each day I would take notes on my supervisor's ideas and my own, and at the end of the day I would go through a run through with my boss for the next day and the ones that followed.
With this system, I found it easier to know what my tasks were, the time frame that should be allotted for them, and on occasion, the order they should be carried out.

It might seem arduous, but doing this did not take much time and for me was dearly needed. When it came to urgent reminders, I always had my phone's calendar give me an alarm for extra assistance.
If anything (to double check), my boss has her own calendar in her office. Though the dates are not set in stone, I would always have an idea what to expect for the next week.

  17. Every day I walk into the physical therapy office and I try to be as productive as possible. The last thing I want is to seem like lazy person who is unworthy of this internship. I know they are doing me a big favor by allowing me to work in their office and I greatly appreciate this.
My goal is to leave there with them very satisfied with the work I have done. I would like to be used more often and be kept occupied more however in the past two week I have not been too busy. I stay as productive as possible and if I notice they need something I try to get it before they notice. I have never really been a secertarty but that’s what I feel like more than an intern or volunteer. I do not mind this and my goal is just to be a positive influence to this small private physical therapist office.

  18. We have new ideas for activities and things that we want to teach the students about, so I am always taking notes during meeting so I can work those ideas into lessons. I have also tried to have a plan b for everyday, usually alternating one days lesson plan with another, to deal with weather issues or if my manager changes her plans. Another thing I have dealt with is trying to keep the students engaged. My solution is to use different resources to teach the material. I have had them complete different activities, using interactive websites, having lectures and discussion, watching videos online and movies.

  19. I am responsible for creating the fall and winter newsletter so I've decided that on Tuesday and Wednesdays on our not so busy days i'll spend 2-3 hours working on the fall newsletters so that i can submit the changes and get feedback. after lunch i spend 2-3 hours working on the winter newsletter and submit the changes and get feedback. So far this has been pretty effective and I've gotten allot accomplished. Although it is allot of work for me since I've never done one before i have been trying hard to get it done a get constructive criticism on it.

  20. Throughout the day I am given small projects that take about half hour or an hour the most. I find i have plenty of time to get things done and not feel rushed. I'm having a hard time however figuring out what my final project will be. Making a "To Do" list helps me out tremendously. It keeps me focused because I always arrange it in order of importance. I tend to stray away from things that seem may take a long time or are tedious and leave them for last. My list reminds me of their importance and it seems to put me back on task. For project that require a little more time than what I am used to i try to give myself 5min breaks in between to stretch and give myself a little treat(usually a Hershey kiss) to get me back on track. 90% of my work load is done on a computer and my eyes tend to get really tired so these little breaks are crucial to how the rest of my day goes.

  21. When I get to work I make a list of things I would to get done at work. When set goals it help me get threw the day because o realize what need to be done and I have to get it done. Being organzie is an big thing on my list it help me get threw the day. I also make sure that I don't confuse my outside life with my job such thing like face book I wait to get on after work.

  22. I realized that when we were going to have Arts & Craft it was a mess. Last summer I felt that it was more organized and set up in a way where everyone was going to be aware of what was going on. When having Arts and Craft today I felt that the person in charge lack organization skills. As if there was no control. When the campers were sitting at the tables they were rowdy and touching everything, the materials were not placed in the table. The arts and craft Leader got some help from a few of the counselors including myself. After everything was handed out and everyone was some what settled in I had approached the girl and told her a little of how we use to set up so the next time we have Arts and Craft there won't be such a big mess.
I think within this a goal for me is to help out those with things they don't already know how to do from previous summer experience.

  23. Basically my job is all about paperwork, mostly done with the computer so I have to be tech savvy. Luckily my last job was mostly just using and learning new computer skills, so this is a piece of cake.

So for me using the computer or my cellphone is the best way to keep my workload not only organized, but also to make sure it's correct. The school I work at is a very technical school and they try to work with the most up to date equipment and software from the iPad to Windows 7.

As well as for organizing paperwork for my supervisor, I'm also shadowing a film studies class. So with that as well I have to be up to date with any knowledge in the field of film. This all requires work on a computer, so I'm pretty much behind either one of the school's Macs or using my own personal laptop.

Of course I don't have all my work stored away on my hardrive, besides I flashdrive, I believe in my little day planner and post-it notes. It's always good to have a back up, especially hand written because there is nothing worse then your computer crashing.

  24. During the second week, I found out that each student had to do individual work and that they had to note every work they do and actually graph it to show their progression. This week I learned how to do that and it was very easy for me to quickly get into it. The teacher actually said I was better at graphing and charting than the teacher aids. I have to organize each assignment to make it compatible on the chart. You get to do many exercises like remembering personal information (Name, Address, Mom’s name etc). Other are just simple math solving, and simple reading assignments. I had to review and schedule each assignment precisely so that the child could complete it. When you had to graph everything, you graph everything. Its was long at first, but I quickly got into it by following the directions precisely.

  25. I work for the Department of Probation under the Bronx High Risk Unit, which supervises individuals who have committed violent felonies. There are a lot of goals that must be met because everything about the probationers life must be recorded. In order to meet every single goal I write down what must be done in order to ask all the right questions and receive the proper documentaion from the probationers. In order to meet goals and deadlines I have to write them down. it is harder to forget things once you write them down. The jokes and coversations that go on in the workplace can derail work productivity but if you learn how to cut it short or not be to involved you can be more productive as a whole. The snack room is the place where you may want to limit your trips to because it is congregation zone.

  26. I work for an Agency and a lot of goals are taken by a step by step process. So you cannot proceed any further unless the basics are taken care of. Example, there is a lot of reading involved at my work site. From screen plays, to scripts to long emails sent in from clients and potential clients. These scripts and screen plays must be read in order to initiate any type of research needed to put a project together. So this may mean actually taken some of the material home and reading off site. I feel if I take things step by step and don't try to get ahead of myself I should be fine.

  27. Working at a Doctor's Office there is a bit daunting. There are days of excitement and other days when there is nothing to do. When it gets hectic I try to remember all the things that I have learned in my previous jobs and what I was told during my training for this job.

During the hectic times I try to make transitions as smooth as possible. I make sure that the patient's files are up to date and the holding room is in order. I try to answer the phone knowing that the nurses and medical assistants are busy and do not have the time to answer more patients.

I try to do things in the order I am told. Especially in a doctor’s office, there is a specific reason why things are done in a specific order.

For me, when the people above me are happy or less stressed, that makes my job much easier.

  28. I agree with Lakiema on how I can contribute to this post. My job is pretty straightforward. This job is different from when I was in a hospital; it is a lot simpler. In a hospital there were so many more rules and policies that had to be followed. At my job now most people only come in for physicals or to say that they have pain somewhere in their body and we refer them to a specialist.

I wouldn't say that I haven't learned from the experience though. It extends my understanding of the medical field. I know a lot more of the acronyms and understand exactly what they mean. I'm glad to be gaining this experience. I will try to interview Dr. Melamed to understand just exactly how he got on the path to owning his own practice? What steps did he take to ensure that he that he would be comfortable taking lesser pay?

  29. As stated in the previous post, time management will solely rely on the relationship of the camp councilor and the child. Maintaining a healthy and friendly relationship can build trust and set a comfort zone. It is important to know each and every camper so that if something comes up an issue can be solved before it evolves to another level.

As a camp councilor it is important to carry out the given instructions on the daily agenda. Activities will have to move on the pace it is set on or fear of missing out on event which in turn will throw of the agenda of the rest of the day. Moving the kids along and being on point will increase the efficiency in the work place.

  30. Working with children the goal is to keep the kids engaged. My goal is to keep the kids as happy as possible without giving in to them. Keeping the kids happy means they listen and that is the ultimate goal. Giving them postive reinforcement and playing around with the kids seem to be the best way to keep the kids engaged. Offering the kids a reward when they behave gives them a incentive to do right. I feel as though this plan has worked so far. I have tried it on a couple kids on the camp who constantly misbehaive and it has worked pretty well. As soon as I offered a reward the kids were on there best behavior and trying not to slip up.

  31. With time management, one of the most important aspect's is get started on it as soon as possible. Procrastination limits the amount of time needed to get work done effectively and prevents you from working at the upmost quality.

  32. At my internship, there are a couple of ongoing priorities, but for the most part every single day there are different tasks that have to get done. Recently Warner Music Group signed a deal with MTV where MTV monitors all our online video content and monetizes it. The other intern and I have been assigned all the YouTube accounts and we have to make sure all the music rights are in order before handing over all the accounts to MTV by September 1st. This is our priority now being that Warner has about 15,000 videos on YouTube and we have to check every single one of them. As for being derailed from work, it's pretty to be distracted. It's summer time and most people want to be doing anything but work, but you have to think ahead and know that having an internship will definitely help you in the future.

  33. I am mangaing my work load very good i try to get important stuff done quickly not very good at it yet but ill get there. It is not easy to derail because if i am doing something then i am goin to get it done. but i just try to stay focus and try my best to do what i have to do.

  34. Once I am given an assignment, I write it down. Forgetting my task and having to ask what that task is twice shows a lack of committment; therefore, I jot it down for memory sake. After that, I am pretty much set. I tackle my assignments on the spot. I am not a procrastinator so I ensure that I handle my tasks once I receive them. Also, I give myself a personal deadline. I like to work hard as I put a ton of pressure on myself. I know my work ethics; therefore, I work to my best potential. By tackling projects on time, this eliminates things that would derail productivity.

  35. Distractions can derail work productivity easily. Making sure that we all stay focused and remain diligent on our assignments is the best way to prioritize our work.

  36. Being a teacher is a very tedioud job. Not only do you have a number of students to teach and look after from lets say 7am to 5pm like in kipp, but you have much papers to grade once the school day is done. To manage this you must have a no nonsense attitude when it comes to getting things done efficiently.
I like to get my work done ASAP, so I can have ample time to myself and do what I want. Its not good to feel trapped and not enjoy what you are doing. Once that occurs you will have bouts of laziness and you will soon realize you have no time to yourself. Manage your time according to how your work load and get it done.

  37. Sorry for the late post.

Procrastination is a problem most of us suffer from. I don't know about anyone else but I would prefer to avoid all nighters. Although Bell Curves has not demanded vigorous work from me, deadlines still need to be kept. With most task given to me, their deadlines are within the next hour. Which means I often have to drop my long term task of assisting with the coordination of the fall fundraiser. Although my assignments need to done in a timely fashion, I still take my time with them to be aware of mistakes.
